BELOW ARE SOME OF THE SAYINGS OF JESUS WHICH ARE CALLED “HARD SAYINGS”

Jesus confronts us with who He is and how we must respond to Him. We must take Him seriously areUserious about Jesus??

Luke 13:23-30: Not everyone who claims His name belongs to Jesus. They may actually be workers of iniquity who will be cast out of His presence when they come to heaven’s door.

“And He said to them, 24 ‘Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.  25 When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, “Lord, Lord, open for us,” and He will answer and say to you, “I do not know you, where you are from,”  26 then you will begin to say, “We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.”  27 But He will say, “I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.”  28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out.  29 They will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down in the kingdom of God.  30 And indeed there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last.'”

Luke 12:49-53: Jesus didn’t intend to unite everyone together in some kind of  “world-love” religion. His call to follow and believe in Him divides believers and unbelievers, even in the same household. If you love Jesus and call Him Lord, you will invite division, persecution and even hatred by those who say they are people of peace.

49 “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!  50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished!  51 Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division.  52 For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three.  53 Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Luke 14:25-28: Jesus isn’t into “self hatred.” He does, however, call us to repentance of sin and submission to His Lordship in such a way that we can have no superior loves or loyalties other than His own. We turn from our own self love in such a manner that it appears to be a hatred of self.  It is certainly a hatred of that love of self which binds us to our own will and perspective at the expense of God’s glory and which is so often a love which is fulfilled at the expense of others.

25 “Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 ‘If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.  27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.'”

Luke 9:21-26: Jesus went to the cross to die for our sins. When we follow His call, we take up our cross and die to our sins, our self-will, our way, our plans, our kingdom. The Christian life is a life focused constantly on self-denial. And although we fail in this aspiration and are driven back to the cross for grace and forgiveness, it remains our goal, with Christ, as our model. Let’s take Jesus’ words seriously. He is still calling us to follow Him today.

21 “And He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, ‘The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.’  23 Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.  24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.  25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?  26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.'”
